On my own
The day disappears into a question
Alone is where you are most yourself, and it is the state hardest to account for afterwards. One search at nine turns into something unrelated by midnight, and you could not retrace the steps if asked.
You are good at making plans. Keeping them is the issue. When the interesting thing and the necessary thing collide, the interesting thing wins, and it is not close.
So the room fills with things that were started. The half-read books, the project at sixty percent, the notes for something you meant to build. You do not throw any of it out, because you genuinely believe you are going back.
Months of unpaid attention on something nobody assigned, until you are quietly the most knowledgeable person you know on it.
Avoiding one dull task by staying up all night with a harder one.
You look unhurried. In fact your head has not stopped all day, which is why the rest never feels like rest.
- I just wanted to know why it does that
- Let me read up on it first
- I was literally about to start
- Goes the whole distance on anything genuinely interesting
- Can hold one problem in mind for weeks
- Corrects yourself without needing to be caught
- Displaces the necessary task with a more interesting one
- Accumulates openings faster than closings
- Sleep and meals are the first things to collapse
- Time alone that needs no accounting for
- A standard that is not the count of unfinished things
Start nothing new this week. Finish the smallest thing already open.
With my partner
Deep about it, slow to say it
When you love someone you get curious about their entire world - what they do, why they think that, what happened before you met. That interrogation is the affection. It is rarely recognised as affection.
Saying the feeling out loud is the part you are bad at. You will send them something relevant to what they mentioned three days ago before you will say you missed them, and to you those are the same message.
Arguments are where it goes wrong. They are describing how it felt and you are establishing what actually happened. Every accurate correction makes it worse, and you usually work that out about an hour too late.
You are curious about them without judging them, which is a rarer experience to receive than you realise.
You answer a feeling with a factual correction and hurt them a second time.
You seem detached. In reality they are the thing your head keeps returning to all day.
- Well, technically
- Huh, that's fair
- Sorry - okay, now I get what you meant
- Accepts them as they are rather than as a project
- Will talk for hours about what they care about
- Does not perform affection, so nothing you say is fake
- Meets hurt feelings with a correction of the facts
- Forgets the dates and the messages that mattered to them
- Goes silent and inward exactly when the feeling gets big
- Time to convert a thought into a sentence
- Someone who does not read clumsy expression as absent feeling
When the accurate sentence arrives, hold it three seconds and ask how they are feeling instead.
At work
Curiosity keeps enlarging the job
You start the assigned task, notice a better way to do it, and follow that instead. Often the result is genuinely better. The schedule is always behind.
You are quiet in meetings until you put your finger on the one flaw, and then the meeting runs forty minutes long. You were not trying to derail anything; you assumed everyone wanted to know.
The weak points are finishing and reporting. You get to ninety percent, the remaining ten percent is boring, and it sits there. You end up credited for much less than you did.
You name the assumption nobody tested, and the thing that would have broken in six months never breaks.
You blow the deadline still looking for the better approach.
Read as uninvested, when actually you hit the boring stretch and stalled.
- Does it actually have to work that way
- Let me try something
- It's basically done
- Stays with a hard problem long past where others give up
- Finds the flaw everyone else walked past
- Owns a mistake with no defensiveness at all
- Drops it at the last ten percent
- Says nothing about progress, so you look like a solo operator
- Visibly stalls on anything uninteresting
- Reasoning behind the decision, not just the decision
- Freedom over how, once the what is agreed
Name the boring last stretch out loud and put thirty minutes on a timer. It almost always fits.
As someone's kid
Quiet, and taking all of it in
You do not say much at home. A lot of what gets asked is a check rather than a question, and a check only needs a short answer.
That is not disinterest. You know exactly what they are worried about, and you have usually worked out what could be done about it. You simply have not said any of it out loud.
When they lecture you, you let it pass. Internally the rebuttal is already written and filed. The relationship largely survives on the fact that you never deliver it.
You quietly research the thing they are stuck on and turn up with an answer.
When the conversation gets tiring you leave the room instead of finishing it.
You read as uninterested, when you were choosing your words and the moment went past.
- Yeah
- I've got it handled
- That's a different thing, though
- Can let a provocation go by without engaging
- Actually looks into their problems and finds options
- Does not carry old grievances around
- Says so little that they worry more, not less
- Argues internally and agrees externally, so misreadings pile up
- The gaps between calls keep stretching
- Questions that are not waiting on an immediate answer
- Choices treated as yours to make
Tell them about something you are enjoying. Not a problem, not an update - something you like.
As a parent
Ask why and you get a real answer
A child who asks why is the best thing that happens to you all week. You do not brush it off. You answer properly, and when you do not know you go and find out together.
You keep few rules - only the ones that survive being explained - and leave the rest to them. Your child grows up expecting their own reasoning to count for something, which is rarer than it sounds.
What suffers is the repeating part. The kit for tomorrow, the same time every night, the form that was due. Your child gets an interesting parent and an unreliable routine at the same time.
You take their questions seriously as questions, and they learn how to think rather than what to think.
The explanation is flawless and bedtime moves around by an hour every night.
You look like the permissive parent. You are actually treating a child as a person whose reasons matter.
- Let's look it up
- What do you think?
- Oh - that was today, wasn't it
- Answers a child's question like a real question
- Explains rules instead of asserting them
- Is pleased rather than threatened when they disagree
- Misses the routine and the logistics
- Reaches for an explanation when a feeling needed holding
- Loses track of the clock inside anything interesting
- Someone to hold the routine with you
- A short stretch of your own head, daily
Pick exactly two things that happen at a fixed time each day, and hold those two no matter what.
With my friends
One long conversation, then quiet
Not many friends, but the ones there are have been there a long time. You are comfortable with a friendship that can go months without contact and resume unchanged.
In a group you listen. Then a subject you care about comes up and you talk for twenty minutes straight, and people who thought you were shy revise their whole assessment.
You almost never make contact first. It is not that the feeling faded; the action simply does not occur to you. You are always glad when they call, and they have no way of seeing that.
You and one friend go three hours deep on something, and they leave feeling like the smartest version of themselves.
A friend needs comfort and receives an analysis of how they got here.
Read as an indifferent friend, when reaching out is simply not a thought that arrives.
- Oh, I know about this
- Sorry, I went quiet for a bit
- So how did that actually turn out
- Gives an honest read instead of agreeable noise
- Genuinely curious about what a friend is into
- No awkwardness after a long gap
- Almost never initiates
- Analyses when the moment called for company
- Makes the plan, then dreads it the day before
- Friends who do not count who called last
- At least one person who goes deep on a subject with you
Whoever just came to mind - message them now, while they are still in mind.
