In elke rol
On my own
Alone, you open another thing
Time to yourself turns into a new project. Something to learn, a plan to make, the furniture moved at eleven at night for reasons that were compelling at the time.
Resting quietly does not work for you. With no input at all you get restless rather than calm, so the thing you started in order to relax becomes another thing you are doing.
What accumulates is evidence. The notebook that stops in March, the instrument from one enthusiastic month, the folder of a project you loved for three weeks. Seeing it drops your mood, and the fastest way out of that mood is to start something new. Breaking that loop is the central task of this type, and almost nobody names it out loud.
Op je best
You start things other people are too self-conscious to start, and end up with a combination of skills nobody else has.
Op je slechtst
The unfinished pile grows, and you start something new to stop looking at it.
Hoe het overkomt
You look easygoing. Sitting still with nothing happening is actually the hardest thing you do.
- Maybe I'll try that
- This time I'm actually finishing it
- Oh, I started that once
Wat hier werkt
- Begins things without needing to be good at them first
- Learns fast on your own
- Walks away from a dead end without sulking
Waar het schuurt
- All beginnings, no endings
- Cannot tolerate stillness
- Judges yourself by what you left unfinished
Wat hier nodig is
- Credit for something you finished
- A weekend without opening anything new
Eén ding om te proberen
Before you start anything new, either finish one open thing or formally quit it. Quitting counts as closing it.
With my partner
Never boring, slow to feel safe
The early months are genuinely wonderful. New things to do, conversation that does not run out, and someone who makes them laugh most days.
You are a good partner to talk to. You want to know how they think and you will argue with them seriously, which is a form of respect. It stops being respect at the moment they needed you on their side rather than opposite them.
The hard part is the ordinary stretch. Once the novelty is spent, the small maintenance of a relationship gets boring, and boredom is the one thing you handle badly. What they experience is not that you stopped loving them - it is that your attention moved. That reads as worse, and it is harder to argue with.
Op je best
You make them laugh, make them think, and make ordinary weeks feel like something.
Op je slechtst
Once the novelty fades, the basics slip - the call, the plan, the date you said you would keep.
Hoe het overkomt
Read as shallow, when the feeling is real and the daily maintenance is the actual weakness.
- What if we did this instead
- Okay, but look at it the other way
- Sorry, it completely went out of my head
Wat hier werkt
- Never boring to be around
- Genuinely curious about how they think
- Does not hold a grudge after a fight
Waar het schuurt
- Takes the opposite side when they needed an ally
- Forgets the dates that mattered
- Attention drifts once things are familiar
Wat hier nodig is
- Someone to think out loud with
- A way to make the routine stretch interesting rather than survivable
Eén ding om te proberen
Propose nothing new this week. Do the thing they already liked, a second time.
At work
Shakes the board, moves to the next one
You are the most interesting person in the meeting. You put an angle on the table nobody had, and a conversation that had gone rigid starts moving again.
Then comes the part you are bad at. Unless the person with the idea carries it through, your interest drains out, and the longer the delivery phase runs the less visible you become in it.
You also disagree by habit. You believe you are improving the meeting, and by the third time the team is simply tired. That is precisely how you arrive at the day you have a genuinely important objection and nobody in the room is listening.
Op je best
Everyone is stuck, you produce a different road, and the project survives.
Op je slechtst
You take the interesting half and leave the tedious half to somebody else.
Hoe het overkomt
Read as showing off, when you generally just cannot sit with a worse answer than the one you can see.
- What if we did this completely differently
- Let me just build a version
- So who's finishing this part
Wat hier werkt
- Unsticks a stuck discussion
- Admits a failure quickly and moves
- Works with new people immediately
Waar het schuurt
- Loses interest at delivery
- Disagrees so routinely it costs you credibility
- Hands the finishing to someone else, repeatedly
Wat hier nodig is
- Room to try something unproven
- Someone to carry the dull stretch with you
Eén ding om te proberen
Have one fewer idea this quarter, and personally carry one of them all the way to done.
As someone's kid
The talkative one at home
You talk to your parents more than most people do - what you saw, what you read, the thing you are into this month. The house is livelier when you are in it.
When you disagree, though, you do not let it go. You argue to win, and you get there, and your parent is left with nothing to say. You won, and the evening is worse, and both of those are true at once.
You also break small promises. Not from indifference - something more interesting appeared. From their side you become the child who is wonderful to talk to and hard to count on, which is a painful thing to be.
Op je best
You keep bringing the outside world in, and their world gets larger because of you.
Op je slechtst
You turn a conversation with your parent into a debate, win it, and everyone feels worse.
Hoe het overkomt
Read as all talk. The intent is real; it is the follow-through that keeps slipping.
- No but see, that's not quite it
- I'll do it this time, properly
- Apparently they've changed how that works
Wat hier werkt
- Actually talks to them, at length
- Keeps bringing them new things
- Gets over a row quickly
Waar het schuurt
- Turns conversation into debate
- Puts off the visit and the call
- Promises ahead of what you deliver
Wat hier nodig is
- Disagreement that is allowed to just sit there
- A slip treated as a slip, not as a verdict
Eén ding om te proberen
Lose one argument you could win. Watch what happens to the room.
As a parent
Unbeatable at playing
You are the parent who plays properly. Games invented on the spot, absurd answers to real questions, a house where being funny is a legitimate way to spend an afternoon.
You treat a child as a person. You explain why not, you let them push back, and you are visibly pleased when they out-argue you. They grow up expecting their own mind to count.
Consistency is where it goes. What was fine yesterday is not fine today, and the rule bends with your mood. Your child gets an entertaining parent, and also the job of working out where the line is this week - which is a real cost, even when everything else is good.
Op je best
You build a house where thinking out loud is fun, and a child raised in one of those keeps it for life.
Op je slechtst
The rules move day to day and your child starts reading your face for where the line is.
Hoe het overkomt
Looks like the fun parent. From inside, your child may be doing more guessing than you realise.
- Okay, what if we tried it this way
- Yesterday was yesterday
- Honestly, your idea's better
Wat hier werkt
- Actually plays, rather than supervising
- Welcomes being argued with
- Tries new things with them without fear
Waar het schuurt
- The rule changes with the day
- Forgets what was agreed
- Puts off the unglamorous routine
Wat hier nodig is
- Someone holding the rules with you
- A minimum structure you do not renegotiate
Eén ding om te proberen
Pick three rules and hold those three regardless of mood. Everything else can move.
With my friends
The room stops being awkward
You make the atmosphere. Newcomers get absorbed, silences get filled with something worth talking about, and a table that was going flat picks up when you sit at it.
You have a lot of friends. Wide rather than deep, and there is someone you know in almost every room.
The old friends have a complaint, though. There is always someone new beside you and the messages get further apart. It is not that the feeling faded - you are simply fully present with whoever is in front of you - and saying that out loud does not comfort anybody who has been waiting.
Op je best
You turn a stiff gathering into something people are glad they came to, which fewer people can do than claim to.
Op je slechtst
A friend needs comfort and gets an alternative perspective.
Hoe het overkomt
Read as a lightweight friend, when your attention on the person in front of you is completely real.
- Oh that sounds brilliant
- It's been ages, hasn't it
- But flip it round for a second
Wat hier werkt
- Makes a newcomer comfortable in minutes
- Backs a friend's risky idea
- Does not stay angry
Waar het schuurt
- Long silences hurt the oldest friendships
- Offers a new angle instead of comfort
- Makes the plan, then moves it
Wat hier nodig is
- One friend you go deep with
- People who forgive the gaps
Eén ding om te proberen
Message your oldest friend about nothing in particular. Not someone new.
