The Compass

Quietly certain about the direction

You read people quickly and hold what you learn for a long time. You care about being on the right path more than being liked on it, but you rarely announce the conviction - it shows up as a decision that seems to arrive from nowhere.

Forces

  • Understands what someone means underneath what they said
  • Holds a long-term value steady when it becomes inconvenient
  • Gives people the sense of being genuinely seen

Angles morts

  • Absorbs other people's states and calls it empathy until it becomes exhaustion
  • Withdraws instead of stating the boundary that would have fixed it
  • Decides someone is finished with, without ever telling them

Dans chaque rôle

On my own

Alone is where you refill

Solitude is not a preference for you, it is maintenance. Left alone you go inward - writing, walking, turning something over. You have a strong internal sense of what your life is supposed to mean, and a low tolerance for spending it on nothing.

Ce qui fonctionne ici

  • Genuinely knows your own mind when you get the quiet to hear it
  • Turns private reflection into a clear sense of direction

Où ça coince

  • Rumination masquerades as processing
  • Ideals set so high that ordinary days feel like a failure

Une chose à essayer

Give the loop a deadline. When the thinking stops producing anything new, go outside.

With my partner

All the way in, once

You are looking for depth, not company. Once you are in, you are extraordinarily attentive - you notice their moods before they do and you carry the emotional weather of the relationship. The risk is that you carry it silently and resent it later.

Ce qui fonctionne ici

  • Attentive in a way that makes a partner feel deeply known
  • Committed to growing the relationship, not just keeping it

Où ça coince

  • Expects them to notice what you did not say
  • Withdraws when hurt, which reads as punishment even when it is self-protection

Une chose à essayer

Say the need as a plain sentence on the day it appears, not as a summary three weeks later.

At work

Quiet, then unmistakably clear

You sit through most of a meeting and then say the sentence that reorganises it. You need the work to matter, and you will burn out fast somewhere that treats people badly, no matter how good the role looks on paper.

Ce qui fonctionne ici

  • Sees the human consequence of a plan before it is implemented
  • Produces careful, thorough work with real conviction behind it

Où ça coince

  • Conflict avoidance lets a bad situation run far longer than it should
  • Takes on the team's emotional labour and gets no credit for it

Une chose à essayer

Raise the problem while it is still small enough to be a comment rather than a resignation.

As someone's kid

The one who felt everything at home

You picked up the atmosphere of the house early, and probably managed it. As an adult you are attentive to your parents in ways they may not see, and you keep a great deal of your own life private to avoid worrying them.

Ce qui fonctionne ici

  • Genuinely tuned to what a parent is not saying
  • Consistent and caring even in a difficult family

Où ça coince

  • Managing the family mood becomes a job nobody assigned or thanked you for
  • Old family patterns still pull you into a role you outgrew

Une chose à essayer

Let a difficult family mood exist without fixing it. It is not yours to hold.

As a parent

The parent who sees them

You know your child's inner life better than most parents do, and you protect the space for it. Your home is emotionally safe and your standards are moral rather than performative. Your own needs, though, tend to end up last on the list.

Ce qui fonctionne ici

  • Notices a child's distress long before it becomes a crisis
  • Teaches values in a way that actually takes

Où ça coince

  • Self-sacrifice quietly becomes depletion and then irritability
  • Sensitivity to their pain makes it hard to hold a necessary limit

Une chose à essayer

Model taking care of yourself. They are learning what an adult is allowed to need.

With my friends

Few people, very deep

You do not do wide circles. The friends you keep get real intimacy and steady attention, and they come to you with the things they tell nobody else. What you find hard is asking for the same, so the ledger runs one way for years.

Ce qui fonctionne ici

  • Listens in a way that changes how someone understands their own situation
  • Loyal for decades without needing constant contact

Où ça coince

  • Gives far more than you request, and quietly keeps count
  • Cuts someone off internally long before you say anything to them

Une chose à essayer

Bring one of your own problems to a friend before it is resolved. That is the part you skip.
